This is a beautiful 2-toned ARAGONITE crystal cluster from Morocco. Sometimes also called a "Sputnik" formation! It has both red and white/grey crystals throughout. Very nice coloring and interesting crystal formations. This is a natural specimen, not polished or altered in any way. Great for crystal grids, sacred arrangements, or just a cool display piece.
Aragonite is named after the Aragon region of Spain, where "pseudo-hexagonal twinned crystal forms" were first found. Aragonite is actually a polymorph of the mineral Calcite. This means that they share the same chemical composition but have different crystal structures. Aragonite forms orthorhombic crystals, and Calcite forms trigonal crystals. In nature, Aragonite is the main component of many different organic substances. For example, Aragonite forms naturally in almost all mollusk shells. The iridescent surface on pearl and mother-of-pearl is made up of a thin layer of Aragonite that mollusks and other related invertebrates secrete. Pretty cool!
