This is a Fossil Sea Urchin / Echinoid Fossil specimen. Shown next to a US quarter coin for size comparison. The dome has been polished nicely, while the edges and underside have been left more natural. ALL parts of the fossil are from 100% natural formations in the stone.
Echinoid Fossils are the fossilized remains of sea urchins, marine invertebrates that lived on the seabed. Humans have been fascinated by these fossils for thousands of years, and often considered them to be lucky. They featured in both Celtic and Norse mythologies, and were associated with burials, spoken of in myths, used in making tools, and used for decorative purposes. They were known by various names including "thunderstones", "fairy loaves" or "shepherds' crowns". The earliest known example of an Echinoid fossil that has been found by archaeologists is from Kent, England and part of a hand axe from the Middle Pleistocene period.
It weighs about 4.5oz and measures about 2 3/4" inches wide/across by 3/4" inch tall at the tallest point. Code-021324-3
