This is a carved Mauve Aventurine ANUBIS DOG totem! This is an unusual color for Aventurine. Aventurine is a form of Quartz. This Mauve variation gets its coloring from a high Hematite and Goethite content. Different amounts of the Hematite and Goethite can produce different shades including more red, more orange, brown, etc. These inclusions are teeny tiny, and so numerous, that they can create a glitter-like effect.
It has a few small organic spots here and there from inclusions that were close to the surface as the stone was carved and polished. The Egyptian God Anubis has several roles to play. He is the protector of tombs, graves, and cemeteries. He was associated with mummification and embalming. He was the Guide of Souls, assisting the departed across the threshold from the world of the living to the afterlife. And he was the Guardian of the Scales, involved with the “weighing of the heart” – where a person’s heart was weighted against Ma’at (or “truth”), represented by an ostrich feather. Only souls lighter than the feather would ascend. He is pictured with a canine head, and his sacred animal is the African golden wolf. Often depicted in black, a color that symbolized regeneration, life, and the soil of the Nile River to the Ancient Egyptians.
