Access the Power of the Phoenix!
by Sherry Whitfield
The Phoenix is a mythical bird that dies, only to be consumed in flame and reborn again from its ashes to a new life: death, regeneration, and rebirth, again. The Phoenix reminds us of the impermanence of life, even while realizing the importance of being committed to living it.
The Phoenix offers us the chance to "keep on, keepin' on" - to learn, grow, adapt, and transform ourselves.
As a spirit animal ally, the Phoenix represents rebirth, transformation, rejuvenation, and renewal. It is strongly tied to the Sun - warmth, light, nurturing. Phoenix brings the Light with it wherever it goes, and reminds us to look for this Light both within ourselves as well as in all others.
As a symbol of the Spirit/Soul or Mind, the Phoenix is eternal and at peace with itself and its lessons, experiences, and trials. It shows us that we are capable of more than we think!
The idea of a bird or bird-like creature that is reborn and lives in cycles is present in a variety of cultures. The Thunderbird, the Hindu Garuda, the Russian Firebird (Zhar-ptitsa), the Persian Simurgh, the Turkish Konrul, the Jewish Milcham, the Tibetan Me Byi Karmo, and the Chinese Fenghuang are some examples.
The Phoenix is strongly tied to the astrological sign of Scorpio, but you don’t need to be a Sun sign Scorpio to benefit from this energy! Anyone can access the energy and power of the Phoenix in their life! We each have all 12 signs of the zodiac in our chart somewhere!
The Phoenix and Scorpio are both associated with rebirth and transformation. The Phoenix can support a Scorpio - or any of us, for that matter - as we learn the lessons of "letting go of that which no longer serves."
The Phoenix also helps us break the chains/attachments we have created for ourselves, OR that have been placed on us by others.
Scorpio can be said to have four stages of awareness that are exemplified by certain spirit animals: the Scorpion, the Serpent, the Eagle, and the Phoenix.
The Scorpion is the first stage, and can be said to represent intense emotions and those may include darker ones at times. The scorpion is a tiny creature that protects itself with a venomous stinger, sometimes reacting without a greater understanding of the situation, lashing out and stinging blindly. They are usually acting out of self-preservation and vulnerability, rather than malevolence, but they can cause more harm than they think.
The Scorpion does not go around starting fights or trouble, but will respond to any perceived threat with great speed and force. Scorpion venom spans a wide spectrum, from merely being irritating to toxic enough to be fatal to those unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of its sting. So, too, does a Scorpio personality have the potential to react.
The animal that represents the second stage of a Scorpio is the Serpent or Snake. This is the stage that teaches us that we have adaptability and versatility, as well as the capability for renewal, regeneration, and rebirth. It is the energy of transmutation, as the snake is always shedding its skin.
Snakes, like scorpions, are often misunderstood and feared. The Scorpio person/energy is likewise a sign that is frequently taken at face value for having a mysterious, and even dark, nature. But they are only mysterious if one hasn’t taken the time to get to know them.
This is also the stage where an emotionally secure Scorpio can become deeply interesting and compelling, making a wonderful companion – as long as you don’t break trust with them. The Serpent can be dangerous, but will move away from an unpleasant confrontation unless it or its loved ones are being threatened.
The third stage is the Eagle. The more extreme or temperamental nature of the first level (Scorpion) begins to understand the potential for transformation with the second level (Serpent), and now evolves into the Eagle; they are able to soar at lofty heights, but they may also still struggle to find their place in the world and perhaps in their own skin.
Loyal and frequently considered to be a visionary, the Eagle aspect makes for a trustworthy partner or friend and is always rising to see the big picture. It’s good to remember that even at their most noble, Eagles are still swift predators. A Scorpio Eagle is a great ally, but be sure to treat them well or they will fly away.
Eagles are symbols of courage and power, able to fly above and overcome obstacles in their paths. As the Scorpio learns from life experiences and sets aside the Scorpion's ever present fears of vulnerability, they can begin to rise above their own emotional reactivity and start to mature.
The Scorpion interacted and reacted heavily with the physical world, the Serpent began to expand their world view and change the way it moved through/approached its environment, and now the Eagle focuses more on intuition, perception, wisdom, and spirituality. The Eagle is able to navigate between two worlds: the air and the land. It has the possibility of a different perspective with its ability to fly, one that the earthbound Scorpion and Serpent could not achieve – unless, perhaps, they are picked up by the Eagle!
Finally, the Scorpio evolves again, into the Phoenix stage of development. This usually happens after a momentous life change, trauma, or an immense personal loss of some kind. These resourceful people have a gift for making something out of nothing. They are reborn from the ashes of their lives in the same way that a Phoenix is reborn from the ashes of its former self. These individuals possess the strengths of all the other forms: the Scorpion's power, the Serpent's capacity for renewal, regeneration and transmutation, and the Eagle's detachment and far reaching perception.
Like the Phoenix, rising from the ashes we can grow through life's hardships, moving through the depths of our subconscious and emotions, rising into the spiritual Light, and into self-discovery. We can challenge ourselves to grow despite the pain of life and we can choose to face life’s intensity full on, so we may shine as brightly as the Phoenix. The Phoenix is reborn from the ashes of its former self, transforming itself, as it begins again.
The Phoenix offers an insight into shedding the attachments, issues, and anxieties that come from being on the Earth Plane – we burn them away (metaphorically!) Fire has been considered a cleansing force for thousands of years, after all.
With the rebirth comes rejuvenation, healing and renewal. A chance to start over, experience a sense of accomplishment, and find ourselves in a way we have never quite been able to before. Will that be our final cycle? Maybe not - and that's OK! The Phoenix energy allows us to rise up from the old ways that no longer serve us: as needed and whenever the time is right.
When we challenge ourselves to grow and are willing to face life’s intensity head on, despite the pain of life, we can shine as brightly as the Phoenix.
